Car insurance tips from the experts

If you’re looking to buy your own car, then you’ll have to get your own insurance. If someone else owns your car insurance policy, then that person probably owns the car, too. If you have a joint car insurance policy with a partner, then it’s possible that someone’s driving history could be negatively affecting the other. You’ll have to share the same policy if you co-own a single car, but if you drive separate cars then it’s possible for each of you to have a separate policy.

Should I get my own car insurance?

Online insurance is definitely safe, but it always pays to check out the company on Google first. If the company has bad reviews or none at all, then get a second opinion before handing over your money. The real danger with online insurance is that most companies just give you a general low price and then “get you” with high prices when they go through the “actual” underwriting process once they have you on the phone.

Is online car insurance safe?

Not really. You need a car in order to buy insurance, but you can also purchase car insurance for a vehicle you’re in the process of buying. You just say “I want coverage to kick in on the day that I buy the car,” and it shall be done. Every insurance provider has its own way of handling payments (annual, monthly, first two months up-front, etc.), but it’s not hard to get insurance lined up once you have the exact car picked out and ready.

Can you buy auto insurance without a car?

You do need car insurance if you’re driving a car, yes. It’s a legal requirement to drive in Ontario, so you do not want to be caught operating a vehicle without it. It’s required across the rest of Canada, too. Don’t even risk doing it. If you get caught driving without insurance, then it could affect your auto rates for years into the future.

Do you need car insurance?

Yes, you can definitely change your car insurance company at any time—BUT the company you’re leaving behind will probably charge you a fee for ending the coverage prematurely (they run on 1-year cycles). The fee is usually equivalent to 1 or 2 months’ worth of coverage, so it pays to wait until your policy expires at the end of the year before making the switch formally.

Can I change my car insurance company anytime?

The car’s owner needs to be on the car’s policy, since the policy is attached to the car. That means you can have a joint policy on your partner’s car, but you wouldn’t be able to insure your partner’s car in your name only. It’s really about who owns the car on paper.

Can I insure my wife's car in my name?

Don’t choose insurance policies. Choose insurance brokers, because they’ll shop around for you to get the best rate on your behalf. It won’t cost you anything extra, either. Otherwise, you’ll spend many weeks trying to talk through insurance jargon and scripted sales chats with a dozen insurance companies.

How do I choose car insurance?

The bare minimum is $200,000 in liability coverage for car insurance, but you don’t need to get any coverage that you don’t want beyond that. It might be a good idea to look at collision coverage for a used car. Comprehensive coverage can be handy if it’s parked outside or in a parking lot, too, but they’re not mandatory to get in the car and drive.

Do I need full coverage insurance on a used car?

Yep. That person has to be able to drive, of course. Just understand that you’re taking on your roommate's driving history, and that’s going to add a layer into calculating your car insurance. Even adding a secondary driver with a great history adds a degree of additional risk, so there’s likely no avoiding a rise in rates—but adding someone with an awful driving history could make your rates shoot through the roof.

You don’t need comprehensive auto coverage, but it helps to protect your car against a lot of common scenarios that can leave your car damaged, even if you’re not driving it at the time. Theft, fire, vandalism, falling objects (like trees), weather damage, or even animals are all part of comprehensive coverage.

Do I need comprehensive car insurance?

You can call up your insurer or reach them on whatever online portal they might provide. If you’re with a broker, then get in touch to say you’re looking for lower rates. The broker can shop around for better rates with new insurance companies (we add new ones every few months), and they can go over cost-saving strategies with you.

How do I change my car insurance policy?

You can definitely swap out cars on your car insurance policy. Just get in touch with your insurance provider and tell them the make, model, and year of the car. The provider will also need to know if it’s leased, financed, or if you own it outright. They’ll walk you through switching car insurance to a new car.
